How To Write A Song - Part 1 - Your Goal

In <a href="http://videgeiger.blogspot.com/2011/05/how-to-write-song-series.html">the introduction to this series I talked a little bit about the overall aspects of songwriting, now I will delve into it in finer detail. First off is preparing and finding a start to the creative process.Creative process?Yes, because this is what it ultimately is about. Creation of a song. Creation of art. Creation of that inner something (thought or feeling) that wants to come out and manifest itself through music. <a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6Jp1JS2TDMc/TdLcop66dHI/AAAAAAAACHw/0-vj2MXFa4s/s1600/31984vim2ozmc92.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">It can be hard to get inspired on demand (in that little time you had cut out to work on this new song) so always be ready with your notebook, guitar, recording device or whatever you use to plot down ideas. You don&#39;t want to miss out when inspiration strikes as you never know when it will strike again.I remember many times where I&#39;ve been in a place and time where I didn&#39;t have the tools to transfer my inspiration into a format that lasts when my memory doesn&#39;t. Don&#39;t do that same mistake. Sometimes it comes back and sometimes it doesn&#39;t. But why take a chance.<a href="http://videgeiger.blogspot.com/2011/05/how-to-write-song-part-1-your-goal.html#more">Read more »

How To Write A Song - Series

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kA4P4Z8egg0/TcreUubI3eI/AAAAAAAACHs/k4yt5jkU9oo/s1600/22006diylbgyhg2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;">I'd like to share my perspective on how to write a song. How to pull together life experiences, melodies, mixing of styles, emotions, impress by technique etc. into a song that will move listeners. I don't have any golden recipe or a scientific method but I feel I have a few thoughts to share with you that might help as a guide in your creative process. It's such an amazing thing that we can put our feelings and thoughts into music and I don't want to squander the magnificence of it too much, but I want to break it down to provide some tools that you can use in your own songwriting. This will be a "How to write a song" series divided into parts. Stay tuned for part one which will be about setting your goals for the song, finding out who you're writing for, why you want to write the song and create a framework around the project making it way easier to move forward and be creative.Either press "Follow" at the top of the screen, subscribe to the rss feed and/or <a href="http://www.facebook.com/VideGeiger">join the facebook page to get an automatic update when the next part comes out.Below I will be posting links to each part:<a href="http://videgeiger.blogspot.com/2011/05/how-to-write-song-part-1-your-goal.html">Part 1 - Your Goal<a href="http://videgeiger.blogspot.com/2011/06/how-to-write-song-part-2-turning.html">Part 2 - Turning Inspiration Into a Song<a href="http://www.freedigitalphotos.net/images/view_photog.php?photogid=1556">Image: nuttakit / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

We&#39;re focusing on getting Through Your Eyes into finished state before we put too much energy on the other tunes and we&#39;re pretty close in having a sound I really like. While I had another full sound scape in my head when I wrote the song, this has turned out to be something more powerful than I thought I could make.In this blog post you will get the benefit of hearing a preview of where we are at the moment as well as a few words on the process of the recording sessions.<a href="http://videgeiger.blogspot.com/2011/05/may-album-update.html#more">Read more »

Spotlight: Peirson Ross

From time to time I feel that I need to spread the word when I find great artists, and through this blog I will put the spotlight on them. I hope you enjoy it.The first to hit the spotlight is the folk musician Peirson Ross from Toronto.<a href="http://ih2.redbubble.net/work.2035634.2.flat,550x550,075,f.peirson-ross.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;">Peirson&#39;s music comes and grabs your attention through thoughtful lyrics, a soothing yet energetic voice and experimental musical settings. I first heard of him through a common friend on the disc golf scene and caught a show in the back room of Rivoli in Toronto. His presence made a big impact on me and he was a great inspiration for me to dig deeper into my own musical path.<a href="http://videgeiger.blogspot.com/2010/10/spotlight-peirson-ross.html#more">Read more »

Raising a child - Being the child you want

As the birth is coming closer and the time when I'm going to be a father is getting near I'm thinking more and more about raising children and life quality and meaning in general. Will I be a good father? Will I avoid the mistakes of my parents? How do I raise the child into being himself and not my image of the perfect son? I say son because that's what we think it will be, which is really exciting.Being the child you wantWhat I'm learning already is that my son will be a mirror of me. What I do and how I act will be how my son will act and do. If I say one thing and do another then my son will learn to say and do differently as well. If I act angry then my son act angry, if I have patience then my son will have patience, if I show love then my son will show love, if I express my feelings, thoughts and fears, then my son will do the same. So the bottom line is, I need to be the one I want my son to be.This is of course the hardest thing because it takes me inside of myself to take care of all those things that need fixing and attention, because I don't want my son to have the same problems I have. I didn't have a lot of contact with my father during my upbringing, so I need to be careful not to continue that path, because that's the key, stopping established paths that are not wanted, letting it go and starting a new path, a path that I feel comfortable living with.Letting the child be itselfHaving said this, I must also point out that in trying to raise the child into something that I want I still need to let the child be itself and be supportive of whom that is. If he wants to be a sports dude then I need to drop my wish for an artistic child however hard that might be. All I can do is to provide the tools for him to choose, to give him experiences and opportunities, to show him as much of life as possible. Through this he will be able to see what paths that match what his heart tells him for that's one thing that I want, for him to follow his heart, so what do I need to do? Follow my own heart of course... this is going to be a life changing journey for me.That's all for now... you can take these words and apply them to you and your child if you have one, hope it might help. I'm guessing I will post more on the parenting topic in the future.

Album update 2 - In the studio

Arriving at the studio Dan&#39;s Pet Shop with two guitars, some gear and a busy schedule I entered this cozy dim lit studio welcomed by Wheels and a big snake (yes, fortunately in a terrarium). I felt right at home with all the instruments hanging on the walls, the rooms of recording equipment and a leather couch to rest a few hairy legs in.<a href="http://videgeiger.blogspot.com/2010/06/album-update-2-in-studio.html#more">Read more »

Album update 1

The story of recording my first CD has been going on for a while, actually the planning started October last year (2009) and after that the preproduction started. I brought material (my songs) to Peirson Ross who co-produce with me, working on minor changes to the songs to make them ready for release, recorded the guitar and vocal tracks and added some harmonies. The songs I recorded were Brown Grass, Stones and Sinking Ship.<a href="http://videgeiger.blogspot.com/2010/05/album-update-1.html#more">Read more »

The art of being you

So who are you? Do you know? Can you describe what in essence is you? Do you define yourself by the things that you own, your children, your beliefs, your opinions, your feelings and thoughts, what your friends see you as, what your parents told you to be, what you aren't... what and who are you, do you actually know? It's an interesting road to walk down, to ponder what it is that makes you who you are. It's my belief that every person is totally unique but also the same. Let me break that down.Every soul is unique in what it has experienced, every person is unique in the infinite variables that makes up a life, no-one is like you, no-one. But we are also the same. We have the same heritage of being human beings, we all have one head, one heart, one soul etc. We're all on the same journey, the journey of life, it's just that we have traveled different distances and different paths, but we all have the same destination, from the first to the last breath. So what makes you who you are? I think it goes deeper than what you feel and think, those are just layers on top of you, they are the product of you, not you in essence. At the core of you, deep inside, are all your experiences as a soul (if you believe in souls and throughout lifetimes if you believe in reincarnation), that is what has gotten you to be who you are. It's maybe easier to say what you are not. You're not your parents, you're not their thoughts and beliefs, you are not your upbringing, you are not what anyone else thinks you are regardless of how much you trust them and their opinions and beliefs and you are not what society and culture says you are. The way to find out what is really you is to open your mind, heart and soul, be 100% truthful to yourself and revise everything you have learnt, been taught, experienced, what you believed to be true, what you believed to be false. Find all those things that does not resonate with you, which feels wrong, which causes you to feel discomfort or doubt, take them and throw them away. Everything you find that makes sense to you, lightens your heart, resonates, makes you say aha... keep it, make that the foundation on which you stand, as soon as it resonates with you then it is truly you.Be aware that old patterns may resonate with you out of habit although it may not be true for you. This is the hardest to revise. A few pointers to help here is to take the thought that may be an old pattern and think about why you think it is true. Is it because it's the same as what your parents thought? Did someone else that you trusted say that it was true. By finding the roots it becomes easier to either pull them up or grow upon them. Also be aware that you change throughout life, you learn, expand, evolve all through your life and you're bound to change your views of the world along this great journey that you're on. The things that were true for you five years ago may not be true now with all the new knowledge and experience you have acquired. So it is healthy to take moments, step outside of the bubble where you live, go away a few days and revise who you are, because you are ever changing, and will never be the same as you were yesterday. We all have gotten this great gift to experience and live our lives, don't spend it by not being you. Spend it being you to be able to experience it fully. You will feel that life runs smother, you will feel that you're a part of the flow.

Time - everybody has it

So you're using phrases like "I'd love to learn that, maybe tomorrow" or "oh, I wish I had the time to do that"? Do you feel like time just keeps on slipping away leaving you going to bed wondering where it all went? You're not alone. We all have 24 hours every day, except two times a year. We all have the choice to prioritize how we spend those hours, what we fill them with. You may think that you don't, but you do, there is always, always a choice. Going to work is your choice, not paying the phone bill is your choice, feeding your children is your choice, not going to that concert is you choice. You may not like the consequences of not feeding your children or not going to work, but it's still yours to make. Saying you didn't have time to call that friend of yours is just a covered up way of saying you did not prioritize to. It's never someone else's choice and it's not society's choice, it's yours. The point is not to make you feel bad over the choices you make (or have made), but to make you aware that by having the choice in your own hands you also have the power to make your life as you want it.You think you need that boring job otherwise you won't get by, won't be able to pay those bills. But that's only because you've made the choice to live a life where you are dependent on that salary. Living in a cheaper apartment or sharing a house with others, buying second hand, sharing cars with friends, living on the country side, all these things are choices you can make to make you less dependent. If you want to you can have a job that takes a few hours each day and live a simple life giving you many many hours each day. If you choose to live a life where you're expenses require a job taking up many hours of your day then it's your choice to do so knowingly that you'll have less time. The point is that you have a choice. By reviewing your life and finding what you want with it, you can also make decisions on what you need to fulfill it. Do you need to spend time in front of the TV, sacrificing things that mean something to you? Do you need to sit on facebook as much as you do? Do you actually need to read this blog? Review your time and prioritize your desires.Sometimes if you have a room of time in your week that is not filled, if you don't actively fill it with something meaningful then it may fill itself with meaningless things. This will bring a feeling of not having any time left for the things you love. So sit down and go through your days, find all those little things that fill them, find the things that you don't really need or want and get rid of them. See now how much time you have and try to fit in the things you've wanted to do but thought you didn't have time to.Having said that. Always have some time open, not planned, that way you keep it open for life to happen, spontaneously. You'll be happily surprised at what life can bring you when you don't force or plan it.Time it's your choice to have it or not.

If you want to you can have a job that takes a few hours each day and live a simple life giving you many many hours each day. If you choose to live a life where you?re expenses require a job taking up many hours of your day then it?s your choice to do so knowingly that you?ll have less time.

Review your time and prioritize your desires.

Sometimes if you have a room of time in your week that is not filled, if you don't actively fill it with something meaningful then it may fill itself with meaningless things. This will bring a feeling of not having any time left for the things you love. So sit down and go through your days, find all those little things that fill them, find the things that you don't really need or want and get rid of them. See now how much time you have and try to fit in the things you've wanted to do but thought you didn't have time to.

Having said that. Always have some time open, not planned, that way you keep it open for life to happen, spontaneously. You'll be happily surprised at what life can bring you when you don't force or plan it.

Time ? it?s your choice to have it or not.

It's never too late to change your life

We all worry about our lives at some point, at least some of us stop for a minute to reflect over where we are right now and how it fits in with the dream we had years and years ago.Do we live through our hearts following that dream? Or, do we walk the road that our parents told us? Are we being led by what society says is the better way? Questions like that are important to ask yourself regardless if it's about the big things in life like your job, your family, your hobbies or the very small things like "do I actually like to go to this restaurant every day?".Some of us do this all day long because we feel we're in a place where we can't stand it but keep on going anyway, afraid of what we would loose if we did change, afraid of what the unknown may contain. Some of us stumble upon these feeling just once in while, when they seems to come knocking. Either way, it's important to take a step back, out of the bubble, to ponder what it is we actually want to do with our lives, you know, that precious gift we've been given, and are we following those paths or are we straying from them without even thinking about it.Since life itself is meant to be lived, it doesn't matter when you stopped living, it doesn't matter at which point you start to live. You may have been working that boring job for 25 years and maybe you're 80 years old. You may think that it's too late to change as it is so little left, what's the point. But that is the point, since there is time left, however little, there is time to change. Because it not the destination (death) that matters, it's the journey (life).Life is not fulfilled when you reach death, but in each and every day and moment that fills your heart, mind and soul.To sum it up:It is never too late to change your life to what your heart desires, because it is not the destination that brings fulfillment but the journey and as soon as you have started the journey you have already changed.
